Meeting of Scotland’s Carmelite Family

Representatives of Religious and Secular members of the Order of Discalced Carmelites from all Scotland attended a Seminar in Mount Carmel Retreat Centre in Glasgow from Friday 12th-14th May to hear a series of talks in celebration of the Centenary of the death of Blessed Elizabeth of the Trinity, a French Carmelite Nun who died at the young age of 26 and beatified in 1984 by Pope John Paul II.

The talks were given by Fr. Eugene McCaffrey, OCD who described Elizabeth as young, beautiful, talented and gifted musician with a keen eye for fashion and glamorous hats, yet ‘a prophet of the presence of God’ and very much a saint of our current times. Participants came from the four communities of Carmelite nuns in Scotland – Langside, Dysart, Falkirk and Dumbarton, and from two of the Secular Carmelite communities - Glasgow and Dundee.

Event organizer Fr. Philip McParland, Prior of Mount Carmel Retreat Centre, said, “The weekend was a perfect way to launch the centenary of Blessed Elizabeth.  It was a necessary reminder that her message is not just for the Carmelite family, but also for the wider Church.  It is the message that the three Persons in God are living and loving in the heart of every baptized Christian.”
